Bernard John Pohl, age 89, of Westphalia, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 2, 2018. He was born on July 13, 1928 the son of Herman and Nina (Early) Pohl. Bernard served as Deacon of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westphalia for over 40 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Bernard was the sexton of St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, the St. Mary’s School Parish facilities manager, was a CCD teacher for many years, and he also worked at Diamond REO for 15 years.
Preceding Bernard in death are his parents; beloved wife of 61 years, Harriet; son, Clair; daughter, Marilyn and two infant children; brothers, Joe and Richard; sisters, Adeline and Helen; and several in-laws. He is survived by his children, Gene (Theresa) Pohl of Westphalia, Rita Patrick of Lansing, Eileen (Randy) Scutt of Portland, and Laura (Greg) Melton of Traverse City; grandchildren, Adam (Lindsey) and Jarid Pohl, Manda and Chris Patrick, Robin and Nathan Rings and Brandyn Scutt, Josh and Brooke Arbuckle, and Gavin and Taryn Melton; 6 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Jean Jones, Cecilia Gensterblum, Marie (Joe) Pohl, Loretta Esch, and Donald (Kit) Pohl.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by The Most Reverend Earl Boyea at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., with the rosary being prayed at 1:30 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia. The family will again receive friends on Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., with the rosary being prayed at 1:30 p.m. and a Scriptural Vigil Service being held at 5:30 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel.
