Bertha E. Simon, of Pewamo, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2018 at the age of 97 with her loving family. She was born on July 3, 1921, in Westphalia, MI, the daughter of John and Theresia (Schmitt) Thelen. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Altar Society of Pewamo. Bertha enjoyed baking and decorating wedding cakes, making beautiful quilts, playing cards, and spending time with her family. Bertha married Norbert Simon on April 10, 1945 in Westphalia. They were married for 58 years, when he passed away in 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, Sharon, brothers, Herman, Albert, Elmer, and Bruno Thelen; sister, Anna Goodman; sisters-in-law, Elaine Thelen, Wilma Thelen, and Estelle Simon; brothers-in-law, Elon Goodman, Leon Simon, Marvin Platte, Herman, Linus, and Raymond Simon. Bertha is survived by her sons, Ron (Jackie), Ken (special friend, Marilyn), and Dale (Carol); daughters, Marie (Ken) Smith, Jane (Ron) Goodman, Joan (Rick) Capel, Joyce (Dan) Weber, Arlene (Roy) Piggott, Donna (Fred) Doll, Carol (Kurt) Thelen, and Wanda (Jim) Martin; sisters, Regina (Harold) Simon, Rita (David) Witgen, Agnes (Ken) Stump, Mary Platte, and Genny (Carol) Platte; sisters-in-law, Bernadette Thelen and Jean Thelen; 44 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 20, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo with Rev. Darrel Kempf and Rev. Charlon Mason presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Saturday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Sunday at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. The rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m., Saturday and 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
