Earl Schmidt Obituary

Earl Everett Schmidt, of Ionia, Michigan, passed into Heaven on August 31, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 18, 1925 to Orin and Bessie Schmidt, the youngest of five children.  Earl was a U.S. Navy veteran, who served in both WWII and Korea.  He was a member of VFW Post 12082.  He retired as a corrections officer for the State of Michigan at the age of 76, and had the distinction of being the oldest corrections officer in the state of Michigan.  His past careers included working at MSU, the Kirby Company of Lansing, and Story Oldsmobile of Lansing.  He drove racecar #510 at Capitol City Raceway, he was a musician who played in several bands in his younger days, but his biggest joy was his family and his love of the Lord.  He was a member of the Restore Church in Ionia.  He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marian Delynn (Haynes) Schmidt; his children, Randy (Laura) Schmidt, Wendy Sheathelm, Brent Sheathelm, Holly (David) Cokonougher, Herb (Becky) Mead, Earl (Jamie) Schmidt, Andrew (Meredith) Brandenburger, and Heidi Slusher; 30 grandchildren; Randall (Mary) Schmidt, Amy (Mike) McGee, Carrie Schmidt, Robin Hammontree, Michelle (Kevin) Ross, Josh Eldridge, Richard Eldridge, Charles Eldridge, Michelle (Tim) Mullins, Justin Daniel, Larry (Ivy) Schmidt, Laura Cokonougher, David (Ashley) Cokonougher, Daniel (Danielle) Cokonougher, Amanda (John) Lupu, Caleb (Sarah) Cokonougher, Herbert (Susan) Mead, Nickki Skuse, Jessica (Chris) Hill, Brad Mead, Jessica Morehouse, Josh (Taryn) Mead, Dana Hereth, Destini Hereth, Courtney (Alec) Lynn, Julia Schmidt, Brandon Slusher, Kailee Slusher, and Gavin Slusher; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents; daughter, Wanda L. Ward; son-in-law, Robert Ward; his former wife, Wanda M. Morse; two brothers, Leland Schmidt and Gordon Schmidt; and two sisters, Madelyn Cook and Carol Frisby.  

A Memorial Celebration of Life is planned for Friday, September 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the House of Prayer, 9974 Old M-78, Haslett, Michigan. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com.
