Joan Laurine Platte, age 83, of Westphalia, Michigan, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away on April 29, 2018. Joan, born December 15, 1934 in Fowler, Michigan, was the youngest daughter of William and Julia (Stump) Theis. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Westphalia and of the Christian Mother’s Society. Joan married Kenneth Platte on September 14, 1957 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fowler, Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, on June 7, 1993. Together they shared 36 years together. She was also preceded in death by her parents; sister, Bernadette Pung; brothers, Jerome Theis and Julius Theis; nephews, Gary Pung, Steven Theis, Joel Platte, and Jim Platte; nieces, Karen Fedewa and Debra Platte. Her husband, children, and grandchildren were the love of her life. Her joy was being busy in her kitchen, cooking and baking for family gatherings. She loved playing cards with friends, planting and caring for her flowers.
She is survived by her daughters, Julie (Michael) Vandermeer of Manchester, Iowa; Kathy (James) Mountz of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Laurie (Mark) Breza of Fremont, Michigan; and her son, Michael (Amanda) Platte of Westphalia, Michigan. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren, Andrea, Caitlyn, Erica, Jacob, Jammie, Krissy, Jenny, Ellie, Vicky, Alexandra, Samantha, Julia, Kenneth, Cassie, Aaron, and Annie. Surviving in-laws include, Germaine Pohl, Marilyn Theis, Donald Pung, Delores Fedewa, Mary Platte, Gene Platte, Carol (Genny) Platte, and Bill (Connie) Platte.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 3, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Eric Weber presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at St Mary Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at St Mary’s Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St. The rosaries will be prayed at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Home, Portland, Michigan.
