Marvin Schafer Obituary

Marvin Andrew Schafer, age 95, of Portland, passed away peacefully on his farm on Saturday, July 7, 2018. He was born on December 4, 1922, the son of Alfred and Cecilia (Schneider) Schafer. Marvin was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Portland and the K of C Council #2168. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII in Korea and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Marvin was a lifelong farmer and is retired from T.R.W. in Portland after 30 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, camping, and was an avid reader. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Ronald, Larry, and Patrick (infant); daughter, Marlene Schafer-Walser; brothers, Clarence, Alvin, Stephen, and Frederick; sisters, Esther Schafer and Marie (infant). Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Mary; children, Janice Glassmire, Julie (Thomas, Jr.) Brennan, Yvonne (Gary) Watkins, Marie (Nelson) Monroe, Steven (Marie) Schafer and Deanna (Tad Drake) Hodge; several loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, Irene Lischkge, Bertha Roggenbuck, Mildred (Art) Schafer, Dorothy Trierweiler, Rita Bashore, Justin (Frieda) Schafer, and Donald (Pauline) Schafer; in-laws, Lucille Fedewa, Marilyn Smith, and Jerome (Carlene) Smith; and many nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Mike Alber at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the V.F.W. Post #4090. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Tuesday at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. The rosary will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. For those wishing, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Patrick Athletic Association or Hospice of Lansing in memory of Marvin.
