Edwin Theis

Edwin Q. Theis, age 95, of Portland, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025. He was born on January 15, 1930, the son of Joseph and Catherine (Schmitt) Theis. Ed was known for his faith in God, saying the rosary daily and was a member of St. Patrick Church. He was a giving man, always willing to lend a hand never asking for anything in return. He retired from General Motors after many years of service and loved fishing, hunting and also enjoyed playing cards. Ed was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion for over 70 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree and the Catholic Order of Foresters.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, JoAnn; son-in-law, Mike Rutherford; siblings, Mary Smith, Henry Theis, and Catherine Haeck. Surviving are his children, Michael (Beth) Theis of Portland, Sandy Rutherford of Westfield, IN and Steven (Sparky Mowery) Theis of Dimondale; grandchildren, Kelli (John) Servizzi, Eric (Trisha) Rutherford, Brian (Erin) Theis, Jessica (Jake) Simon and Ashley (Kyle) Klein; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Kolp, Josephine Fox and Chris Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Mike Alber at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2025, at St. Patrick Church, Portland. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. The rosary will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick Parish or the Soup Project in Portland.
