Gilbert A. Schafer, age 89, of Pewamo, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. He was born at home in Pewamo on December 4, 1931 to Arnold and Dorothea (Halfmann) Schafer. Gilbert was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Hubbardston American Legion Post #182, and the Knights of Columbus #2890. Gilbert was a wonderful cook, showcasing his talents at the K of C bean soup and potato pancake dinner. He loved the outdoors and went on many fishing trips in Canada. He was also a talented woodworker and he donated his handcrafted picnic tables to the St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Festivals.
Preceding Gilbert in death are his parents; first wife, Joan Marie (Thelen) Schafer; son, Terry Schafer; and siblings, Ralph, Stanley, Ronald and Delbert Schafer, and Eveline Miller, Thelen in-laws, Dolores (Tony) Martin. Surviving are his wife, Joan Catherine (Fox) Schafer, children, Vickie (David) Fox, Robin (Tim) Koenigsknecht, and Kurt (Judy) Schafer; daughter-in-law, Jayne Schafer; grandchildren, Terry (Lisa) Schafer, Sean (Lindsey) Schafer, Shelby (Jesse) Schafer, Eric (Kristin) Fox, Bethany Fox, Travis Fox, Brendan Fox, Kelly (Patrick) Orourke, Kevin (Olivia) Koenigsknecht, Ryan (Hannah) Koenigsknecht, Erin (Josh) Gillespie, Rachel (Alex) Schrauben, and Tyler (Michelle) Schafer; great-grandchildren, Sam, Emma, Reid, Corbin, Macy, Katie, Avery, Mikey, Grayson, Levi, Reid, Scarlett, and Elyse, with three on the way; siblings, Bernice (Bill) Karber and David (Barbara) Schafer; Joan’s children and their families; and Thelen in-laws, Patricia (Ed) Wieber, Bernadette (Richard) Droste, Theresa (Casper) Feldpausch, and John (Alice).
A special thank you is given to the kind and compassionate staff at Sparrow Hospital – 7 West and the staff at Fairview Assisted Living for the care they gave to Gilbert.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Darrel Kempf at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 15, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
We will receive family on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia.
The family wishes to follow CDC Guidelines concerning the current pandemic. Accordingly, attendance at the wake and funeral will be closed to family. On behalf of our father, we appreciate our family and friends’ continuous love and outpouring of support. We encourage everyone to stay safe and healthy, and follow CDC Guidelines regarding masks and social distancing.
