Henry Carl Matthai

Henry Carl Matthai, age 97, of Portland, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2020. He was born on October 22, 1922 in Hamm, Germany, the son of Heinrich and Herta Matthai. Mr. Matthai was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lansing, Michigan. His family immigrated to the U.S. in 1925 and they settled in the Detroit area. Henry is a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp, serving as a technician to develop aerial photographs of Japanese occupied territory. He worked for Chrysler Corp. from 1946-1980, specifically in the Mopar Parts Division. On August 31, 1946, he married Mary Meyer and they shared 68 years together. Preceding him in death are his wife, Mary; parents; and sister, Anna. Surviving are his daughter, Nancy (Jerry) Konarska; grandchildren, Keri (Chris) Blough and Mark (Lindsey) Konarska; great-grandsons, Camden Konarska and Cooper Konarska. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 W. Saginaw Street, Lansing, with Pastor Robert Allmann presiding. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will take place at Portland Cemetery.
