Janice Kay (LaDue) Schafer, 79, of Pewamo, Michigan, passed away peacefully at Stoneleigh Hospice Care of Lansing February 24, 2026.
Born November 27, 1946, in Lansing, Janice was the adopted daughter of Stewart and Dorthy (Reed) LaDue of Ionia, Michigan, She always felt deep gratitude for the love and care of her parents.
Janice attended Ionia High School, graduating in 1964, and married Michael O. Schafer on October 7, 1967. She was a devoted wife, mother, friend, a member of St. Joseph Parish Pewamo, St. Joseph's Alter Society, and Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority.
Her career included work as a dental assistant, state officer for the International Order of Jobs Daughters, and social worker. Janice's greatest Joy was nurturing children with love and kindness, leaving an unforgettable mark on countless lives.
Janice is survived by her children; Sara Schafer, Steven (Michelle) Schafer, William (Brenda) Schafer, and Amy (Jack) Potratz, fur baby Jasmine, 12 grandkids, and 9 great-grandkids. Also surviving are her siblings; Maryjo (Dean), Debbie, Lori, Carolyn, Robin, and David, In-laws; Doreen, Paul (Ruth), Charles (Susie) and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceded in death by her loving husband Michael (54 years), parents Stewart and Dorthy LaDue, Helmi, and Alvin; and siblings Ruth (James), Kaye (Douglas), Kristine (Robert), Linda, and Harlayn; In-laws, Mark, Cornelia (Jim), Julie, Julianne (Joseph) ,Alice (Roy), Alvin and very Special nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo, MI, on March 6, 2026 at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Fr. Darrel Kempf presiding and Rev. Fr. Charlon Mason co-celebrating. Rite of Committal will follow at Mt. Calvary (St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery), Pewamo, MI. Visitation will take place at St. Mary’s Chapel, Westphalia from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Educational Trust Fund or Stoneleigh Hospice Care in Janice's memory.
