Joey Bengel Obituary

Joey Richard Bengel, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2024, after a 9-year, courageous battle with cancer. He was a beacon of faith to his family and friends and filled their lives with love and laughter.

Joe had a contagious zest for life.  He enjoyed Sunday morning basketball, AC/DC music, snowmobile trips, the Dallas Cowboys (America’s team), card parties, hunting, fishing, announcing P-W girls’ basketball games, and spending time at the cottage, the deer cabin, and Average Joe’s.  Above all, he loved and cherished his family.

Joe was born on August 24, 1966 to Bobby and Gladys (Platte) Bengel.  He graduated from Pewamo-Westphalia High School and Spring Arbor College.  Joe began his 30-year career as the branch manager for City Bank in Fowler, changed his employment to the State of Michigan for MDOC and DTMB, and retired from the chief accountant position for the Department of Attorney General.  Throughout his life, he loved farming, especially with his dad.

Joe was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Parish in Westphalia and was committed to his faith through leading the rosary before mass, ushering during mass, and altar serving for funeral masses.  He was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2890, serving as a 4th Degree Knight and as a past Grand Knight.

Preceding Joe in death are his father, Bobby; father and mother-in-law, Gus and Laura Pline; sister-in-law, Gina Hengesbach; brother-in-law, Peter Pung; nephew, Noah Thelen; and great-nephew, Lucas Spitzley. Surviving are his loving wife of 33 years, Kelly; daughters, Alyssa (Kaleb) Lenneman and Hannah (Ryan) Koenigsknecht; sons, Drew (Leah) Bengel and Dominic Bengel; and grandchildren, Kayna, Kalia, and baby Lenneman, Emmett Koenigsknecht, and Rosalyn Bengel; siblings, Kurt (Brenda) Bengel, Gail (Eugene) Spitzley, Debbie (Mike) Prince, and Angie (Tony) Thelen; Pline in-laws, Dianne (Bruce) Schafer, Connie Pung, Danny Pline, Pete Pline (John Suckow); Janet (Doug) Feldpausch; Mike Hengesbach, Gene (Shell) Pline, and Kris (Chris) Pline; and many nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Eric Weber at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 9, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Westphalia.  Rite of Committal will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery with a luncheon will follow.  Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday, February 7th, from 5:00 to 8:00, with the rosary being prayed at 4:30, and on Thursday, February 8th, from 5:00 to 8:00.  For those wishing, a contribution may be made to the St. Mary’s Cemetery in honor of Joe.
