John Wooden Obituary

John Bruce Wooden of Portland, passed away on December 28, 2024, at the age of 77. John was the son of Helen Janet (Cochran) and Richard Thomas Wooden Sr. He was the first of five children to be born in a hospital. His siblings were Margaret, Richard Jr., Kathleen, and Jane which all preceded him in death.

John was diagnosed at an early age with Epilepsy. He attended Frost Standard School in Danby Township and from there he went to Portland Brush Street Public School and then graduated from Portland High School in 1965. In 1966, he enrolled in Michigan Technical Institute and Rehabililation Center to learn the vocation of Office Machine Maintenance which after he graduated led him on a career path of self-employment.

In 1969, he married Dolores K. (Austin), and they had two children, Joshua who preceded him in death, and Ashley who resides in Portland. His nieces Kimber and Kari resided at the farm until they graduated high school. After closing his computer store in Portland in March 2009, he lived out his life on the family farm where he resided for all but 3 years of his life.

There will be a Time of Gathering in honor of John from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3, 2025, at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland. Interment will follow at Danby Township Cemetery with Pastor Larry Nalett presiding. Arrangements are entrusted with Lehman Funeral Homes.
