Jon "Mike" Hyland

Jon Michael Hyland “Mike”, husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated public servant, passed away at his home on October 1, 2024, after a short illness at the age of 75. He was born on November 17, 1948 in Lansing, Michigan.

Mike was a graduate of Portland High School class of 1967. He was employed by the City of Portland for 52 years working in various capacities, retiring in January of 2021 as the Electric Superintendent and Director of Public Services. He led the charge of moving the city’s power lines underground and was proud of this accomplishment. His commitment to hard work and customer service was instrumental in making this possible. In 2018 the City Council approved naming a street after him (Hyland Drive) to honor his dedication to the city. For 42 years, Mike volunteered for the Portland Fire Department, 22 of them as Fire Chief, and enjoyed helping people in times of crisis and the camaraderie of the other members. As of October 1, 2024, “827” is out of service. Mike loved vacationing in Florida with his wife, Janet, and going on long car rides, but what brought him the most joy was anything that had to do with his grandchildren, fiercely protecting and spoiling them. Grandpa was always there for them, and they knew it.

Preceding Mike in death are his parents, James and Agnes Hyland; brother, Joseph, brothers-in-law, Pat Seal and Paul Martin; sisters-in-law, Barb Schrauben and Michelle Hoppes. Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Janet; daughter, Kris (Kevin) Schrauben; grandchildren, Kendall (Kyle) Helfrich, Brendan (Kailey) Schrauben, and Mara (special friend, Carson Cooper) Schrauben; brothers, James R. (Penny) Hyland and Jack Hyland; sisters, Toni (Tom) Kissane and Tobi (Bob) Barton; sisters-in-law, Sue Seal, Patty (Gary) Bogard, Carol Martin, Roxie Wilkins, Sherri (Dean) Fedewa, Terri (Jack Sr.) Schrauben, and Laurie Cathcart; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, October 4, from 5-7 p.m. at Lehman Funeral Home, 210 East Bridge Street, Portland.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lehman Funeral Home on Saturday, October 5, at 11:00 a.m.
