Joseph Andrew Brooks, 47, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2024 following a courageous, year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Joseph was born October 18, 1976 to Theresa (Brooks) Verville and Michael Hudson in Kalamazoo.
On a perfectly snowy winter night, Joe married the love of his life and best friend, Julie, on New Years Eve in 2015 at Henderson Castle.
Joe is survived by his Brooksie Bunch: wife, Julie and their 9 amazing children, Jasmine(Peanut), Chandler, Cohen, Addison, Reed, Emma, Drew (Joseph Jr.), Anderson, and Scarlett. Nothing could top the pride Joe felt for his family. He encouraged each of his kids to do the best in whatever they set out to accomplish. Watching them succeed brought him so much joy. The motto he wholeheartedly lived by, “if you’re going to be a bear, you might as well be a grizzly bear,” was often the answer to any question that was brought to him. He always encouraged his kids to give it their all. Joe’s enthusiasm for life is a legacy that will be carried on with pride by his family. Joe is also survived by his mother, Theresa Kay (Brooks) Verville and many cousins, in-laws, nephews and niece.
Joe had many interests throughout his life and was especially passionate about football, baseball, Brazillian Ju Jitsu/martial arts, going to the movies for some popcorn and a Diet Dr. Pepper, riding motorcycles, fantasy football, trivia night, and most importantly, spending time with his family. In Joe’s youth, he played football at Loy Norrix High School. He even held a defensive position for the Kalamazoo Outlaws semi-pro team for a couple seasons. In more recent years, Joe could often be found watching his beloved Lions, Tigers, or Red Sox on TV or at a game. Just a couple weeks before he passed, Joe got out and enjoyed one last baseball game, watching the Lansing Lugnuts win with his family and friends that are like family.
Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents, father, aunts, and “brother from another mother,” Sean Anderson.
Joe was employed in the retail and manufacturing industries all his life. Joe spent many years with Lowes Home Improvement. He climbed the corporate ladder to become an assistant store manager, making many great friends along the way. In 2016, Joe was offered and accepted a position at LL Flooring as a general manager.
Cremation has taken place. Joe’s family will gather for a memorial service at Betzler Life Story Funeral Home in Kalamazoo, MI at 4:30 on September 5th. A time of visitation will follow the service.
Education was very important to Joe. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts will be used to further the educations of Joe’s children.
