Joseph John Distel, age 70, of Pewamo, passed away on Monday, October 5, 2020. Joe, known by many as, “Joey D.” was born in Lansing on August 3, 1950, the son of Robert and Catherine (McGuire) Distel, Sr. Joe was a graduate of the East Lansing Class of 1968 and he later continued his education at Lansing Community College. He worked for the State of Michigan – Family Independence Agency until his retirement. Joe was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War. In his earlier years, he was active in in the PW girls basketball program where he coached the middle school girls basketball team. He also helped out with the area boy scout and cub scout programs.
Preceding Joe in death are his parents; brothers, Robert Distel, Jr., James Distel, and Stephen Distel; and sister-in-law, Linda Distel. Surviving are his beloved wife of 47 years, Patricia (McCormick) Distel; children, Ryan Distel, Lynn Distel, and Daniel Distel; grandchildren, Isabelle and Ginger Hellman; siblings, Frank (Sandy) Distel, Tom (Kathy) Distel, and Jane (Don) West; in-laws, Charlotte Distel, Linda Atwood, Diane McCormick, Sue McCormick, and Mary (Al) Thelen; and many nieces and nephews.
A private traditional family graveside service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Pewamo with Rev. Darrel Kempf presiding. Military Honors will be provided by VFW Post #3733. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com.
