Marie M. (Theis) Cook, age 91 of Portland passed away peacefully surrounded by family. She was born in Riley Township, Michigan, the daughter of John and Leona (Platte) Theis. She married William J. Cook on October 28, 1954, they were married 35 years. He preceded her in death in 1990. She was a devout member of St. Patrick Parish in Portland. Marie and Bill were one of the founding members of the Father Flohe Foundation. She served as President of the St. Patrick’s Altar Society and served as a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound. Marie and Bill, along with Julius and Marjorie Cook were the founding members of Cook Brothers Excavating, Inc. Marie was a dedicated wife and mother, she enjoyed baking and was known for her cinnamon rolls, homemade bread, and cookies. She loved attending her children’s and grandchildren’s events.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter-in-law, Michele Cook; sisters, Germaine (Gerald) Miller and Geraldine (Denis) Nurenberg; brother, Donald Theis; sisters-in-law, Revella (Marvin) Lawless, Lorraine (Tony) Pohl, Marie (William) Harvey, Joan Huhn; brothers-in-law, Julius (Marjorie) Cook and Norman (Blanche) Cook.
Surviving are her brother, Leon (Mary) Theis; children: Keith (Kathy) Cook, Carol (Dale) Kramer, Bruce (Khristie) Cook, Judy Kransz, Dale (Mary) Cook, Lisa (Andrew) Barrone, Ken (Mary) Cook, Diane (Tim) Hafner, William Cook, and Joe (Lindsey) Cook; 25 (plus one on the way) grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren. Also, surviving are her in-laws, Wilma (Francis) Trierweiler and Carl Huhn; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland on Saturday, May 3, 2025 from 6-8 p.m. and also on Sunday, May 4, 2025 from 5-8 p.m. The rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Mike Alber at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 5, 2025 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery.
