Mary “Katie” Kathryn Brewbaker passed away peacefully in her home on February 13, 2026, at the age of 94, surrounded by her devoted friends Jeanne, Cheryl, and Maria.
Katie was born on December 26, 1931, in Elsie, Michigan, a small town that shaped her steady character and lifelong independence. From those early beginnings, she grew into a woman who was determined to see the world and live life on her own terms.
After graduating from Michigan State University, Katie built a meaningful and accomplished career as an administrator with the Michigan Medical Society. She loved her work and the relationships she built there, taking pride in contributing to the medical community across the state. She approached her career with competence, intelligence, and a quiet authority that earned respect.
Katie’s curiosity carried her far beyond Michigan. She traveled extensively throughout her life, visiting Africa, Japan, Vietnam, and many countries across Europe. At a timewhen solo travel was uncommon for women, she went anyway. She was a pioneer inmore ways than one—owning homes as soon as women were legally able, navigatingairports alone, and carving out a life defined by independence and confidence. Shewas, unmistakably, a force to be reckoned with.
Closer to home, Katie was deeply woven into her community. She loved her routines and the familiar faces that came with them. One of her greatest daily joys was visiting Flap Jack for breakfast, where she could be found enjoying her meal, sharing conversation, and greeting friends. She valued connection and consistency, and her presence became part of the rhythm of the place.
She found peace outdoors in her garden, tending to her plants and spending time in the fresh air. She was an avid reader, always with a book nearby. Music filled her home as well—classical piano especially—honoring her mother, Zella, a gifted classical pianist. The sound of piano music was both comfort and memory for her.
She shared a deep and abiding love with her sisters, Alice and Polly, who preceded her in death. That sisterly bond shaped her life, and she carried their memory with her always.
Katie also had a tremendous heart for animals, especially cats. Over the years she cared for many beloved feline companions, each one receiving her affection, patience, and protection.
