Mary Alice Lawless, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Portland, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on August 7, 2022. She was born on December 11, 1926, the daughter of Harry and Margaret (Moyer) Smith. Mary Alice was a member of the Portland United Methodist Church for over 50 years and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was most well known for her potato salad, love of a good card game and sports, especially MSU football and basketball and Tiger baseball. She was a strong supporter of all her children's, grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's sporting events. Left to cherish Mary Alice’s memory are her daughters, Connie (Chris) Gill and Deb (Jim James) Martin-Gill; sons, Larry (Jean) Lawless, Ken (Cindy) Lawless, Tom (Deb) Lawless, and Steve (Debbie Patton) Lawless; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law; Carolyn Smith and Lois Smith. Preceding her in death are her husbands, Arthur Martin and Robert Lawless; parents, Harry and Margaret (Moyer) Smith; brothers, Douglas, Richard, Roger, and Allen Smith; sisters, Geraldine Lakin Hatch, Harriett Juenker Patrick, and Marcia Ackerson; stepdaughter, Sandy Lawless; and son-in-law, Greg Gill. The Memorial Service will be officiated by Pastor Letisha Bowman at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at the Portland United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Portland Cemetery.
