Paul Fitzpatrick, age 43 of Dewitt, Michigan, passed away peacefully in his home on September 9, 2023, after a long and brave battle with cancer. Paul was born in Cheboygan, Michigan on January 28, 1980, and was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. He was a graduate of LaSalle High School in St. Ignace and Western Michigan University, having earned a degree in political science. Prior to his illness, he worked for many years as a property manager, was a licensed real estate broker and had his own company.
Paul remained positive, grateful, and optimistic throughout his long illness, and he was an inspiration to anyone who spent time with him. He loved music and was an accomplished guitarist. He was a passionate Detroit sports fan and loved watching the games with family and friends. He enjoyed cooking, making bread and canning, and he was always reading and learning. He served as a resource to cancer patients at the UofM sarcoma clinic who had undergone similar loss of limb and treatment, and he would regularly receive calls and talk with patients about the journey. He had an infectious laugh and sense of humor, and always had his beloved boxer, Bruce, by his side.
Paul is survived by his father, Bill Fitzpatrick, mother, Terri Lyn (Smith) Fitzpatrick, and brothers Andy, Sam and bonus brother Moses; grandmothers Eleanor Fitzpatrick and Sharon Smith of St. Ignace; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Jim Fitzpatrick and Terry Smith.
Pallbearers are Paul’s brothers, and cousins, Jake Smith, Josh and Tyler Stascak, Nick and David Brown and Doug Thibault.
The family will receive visitors at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in St. Ignace on Saturday, September 16, 2023, beginning at 10:00 a.m. with funeral service at 11:00. There will be a luncheon at the VFW Hall following the service.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mackinac County Animal Shelter or the St. Ignace Public Library, honoring Paul’s love of dogs and reading. Online condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com.
